Hail Bro, whats up there?
We’re doing well, nice period for the band with some really good news and projects.

At first (it is going to be classic) can you give us a little bio…
Death Agony is a French Death Metal band founded in summer 2005. After 1 demo in 2007 and 1 EP called “Resilience” in 2009, we’ve finally released our first album in September 2012 by our own. We are mainly inflenced by classic metal bands of the 90’s, such as Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, Six feet Under, Vader

“Carcinogenic Memories” Album is a high quality work. Would you tell about preparation ranks of this album? How difficulties did you face?
Songs composed especially for this album were between 6 months and 2 years old. We were obsessed to make a really good first release, so we took 3 months to prepare it. We did it intensively, because we’ve made a try before in terms of recording, and we saw what did not work.

During and after records. Did you face any Technical problems? Have you ever faced any hardness in your country while doing this job?
We recorded, mixed and mastered it at the Ace of Spade studio in the north of France, which is a friend of our (and also guitarist in the French Black Metal band Dark Managram), from November 2011 to May 2012. We had time to do it in a comfortable way, so this was really appreciated, and he made an amazing work! The difficulty was to be satisfied with what we had done, and stop the work to release the album. We could still be working on! We are convinced that if a band is ready to blast ears, the only real problem it may have to resolve is the money. Working in a studio is generally fucking expensive.

Let’s pretend that you have an agreement with a record label. How much would you allow the record label to interfere your band’s image?
The question gets timely. We’ve just signed with the French label “Great Dane Rec.” for the distribution and promotion of “Carcinogenic Memories“. That’s a great opportunity for us, because this is the kind of label that fits us, its members are passionate metalheads, and we have a really good contact with them. They also may produce the second album. They know what Death agony is about, and we know what is expected by them. So if we work with them in the future, this would be the perfect collaboration, because we share the same opinions.

That does the band do in nowadays? What are the last news and developments?
As I told you we’ve just signed with Great Dane Rec. which is a fucking good step for the band! We are also working on the second album, we have few songs already composed on a specific thematic, I can tell you that this release will be brutal! We hope we could record it before the end of the next year. We’ve also thought about an eastern european tour, we are still thinking about it, we hope we can do it as soon as we can. At this time, our official website is in construction; It will be only during September 2013, a kind of deathagony.fr or something like that, check it out!

Lets talk about lyrics some. What do you meantion in lyrics and who is writting them?
Death Agony deals with pyschological violence, generaly speaking. In the album, all songs are “Carcinogenic Memories“, as it is suggested. These are some traumatising experiences that may conduct to the death of the soul. Some songs are written in a more fictionnal way, some also contains physical violence and gore lyrics to add heavyness to the dramatic atmosphere. I (Matt, Guitar and Voice) write all those lyrics, but everyone in the band often suggest some thematics. Fatality is a reccurent theme.

What about your concerts? How is its mood? For instance do you play cover tracks?
Live shows are really important for us, that’s where our music comes into its own! We fucking love to headbang with the public. Sometimes we add one or two covers in our setlist, classical stuff from Slayer, Black Sabbath.. to share something more with the public, it’s also a kind of tribute to our “Godfathers” who influence us. We had great opportunities for the last 3 years, opening for Darkane, Debauchery, Exhumed, Master and many other great bands. It was just amazing to meet all those guys. Next big show will be December 8th 2013 in Lille (Fr), we share the stage with Natron and Deranged. We’d like to thank Wolvesoftheunderground (gigs organiser) and Kaotoxin (Label) for those opportunities they gave us. Check their pages, these are passionates metalheads!

France Metal scene has presented very quality bands to the world. What are your opinions about this? And is there hardness of doing this job in your country?
The french metal scene is paradoxal: as you said there are many great bands,on the other hand all has evolved in such an underground way that it was not easy for them to make them hear. I think that in France, you can’t earn money being only musician in a metalband. Of course there are exceptions (Dagoba, Gojira), but the extreme metal scene is different. Fortunatly France starts to get popularity: some labels are famous (seasons of mist!), there are more and more events (Hellfest, Motocultor Fest) If you look closely, you’ll see there are specific mouvements in the different regions of the country: Death, Black, Grind… And to talk about what I love, France contributed to the rise of the Death Metal genre in the middle 80’s with loudblast, Agressor, Mercyless, No Return, Massacra.

Well, to you whats the difference of Velocidad Death Agony from other Death Metal bands?
Euh.. fucking hard to answer this! We play what we like, we know we do not create a new genre, and we are ok with this. We are not creating songs by applying a specific schema, So that the album may not sound repetitive. But the thing that may be different from other Death Metal band is that we try to deal with dark and morbid stuff and focalize on the psychological aspect. The cover of the first album is also different from the cliché of the death metal scene, we wanted to illustrate this by instauring a king of mistery, which is for us deeper than showing a slaughter for exemple.

How much importance do you give to your band’s advertisement? And how much important are other people’s thought?
Advertisement is a way for a band to be heard by many people, but on the other hand we are not obsessed by it. We had reviews in specific webzine and Fanzine, and maybe in magazines in the future, we’ve been airplayed in some metal radio broadcast over the world, and it suits us like that. The main goal is to play fucking metal! Critics we received about the album are mainly pleasing, in the way that we know people appreciate what we did, and that’s for us the most important, because we do not play only for us! And negative stuffs we’ve heard about it push us to go beyond our limits. Nevertheless we know we won’t please everyone, as every band that exists!

Görsel

what are your opinion about mp3 problem? Are you an mp3 listener? F.I. if you see your tracks in an mp3 format at internet, what do your reactions be?
We all listen to MP3, because technology allows us to listen to music easily. So that’s a good thing, and it also allows bands to be listened everywhere in the world. As a passionate metalhead I also host a metal radio broadcast where I can highlight many underground bands, thanks to MP3. But the problem with MP3, that’s true, it’s a money issue. As a band we do not try to earn money to live, but to make the band exist. And if you want to record, press, produce merchandizing, you have to buy all this. So if there were not passionate people who want to buy your cd or mp3, I think it would be difficult for a band to evolve.

Sex, Narcotic and Rock’n Rol. The best known slogan of the Rock’n Roll. Is that a cliche or does it really tell us about Rock’n Roll?
Without beer, there is no rock’n roll!

Imagine that You are in a boat with two people; You, Barack Obama and Eminem And you are caught in a storm and your boat take in water, for that reason you have to throw one person to the sea. Which person do you throw to the sea? And Why?
I will throw my self because this kind of choice brings shit!

Can you tell a comic event that happened with your band?
Our bass player, Fiston, has had the chance to saw his own band playing live! Because of an arm injury, he couldn’t play, so we decided to go on stage without bass. That was particularly comic to see our own musician supporting us during the show, and of course at the end he congratulated us as if he was an old fan!

What do you say about Turkey and Turkey Underground? Have you been in Turkey?
I have no fucking idea about what is the extreme metal scene in Turkey! The only thing I know, and that surprises me, is that Melechesh recorded its last album in Turkey. So I imagine that metal may be important in this country.

It’s time to end up the interview but before I want to ask what would you want for written in your tombstone? I wish Death Agony a successful future and have a abundantly prizes!
“Please, quiet, I’m sleeping” would be the best thing for this stuff! Thank a lot for your support, we wish Krvestrebzine a long life, and keep support the underground!

Hail dude, when you answer my questions are you listening to whom now?
Salut man! At the moment no music, just listening to Horem Pádem movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OY_X7-Heh4A while I am reading/answering your questions 🙂

How did you start this job? what were your aims when you start?
Oh, it was in late 90´s… In the fact I didnt plan to open any distro or label… it arised itself when I was trading with free copies of CDs and tapes which we got from Leviathan recors who released first CD of my band Cerebral Turbulency called “as gravy”. I traded with running distros/labels at that time as Obscene, Shindy, Epidemie, Morbid, Bones Brigade etc… And what to do with that traded stuffs??? I tried sell some to my friends around, later on our gigsand so on… In the end I gather some money from this selling and I decided to release second album of CT myself and it was regular start of Khaaranus.

Khaaranus Prod. is a very underground company. Do you select the bands according to what?
To be honest, I stopped releasing CD in 2010 (last release was Rubufaso Mukuo album “ReMoLAB”), since that year I run Khaaranus only as distro. But this year some things made up around and I made deal with my friends G.O.R.E about exception in non-releasing CD and I made their new album just for enjoying and to have some nice activity in grind/metal scene ater few years again 🙂

Görsel

What are the plans beloning to future? Make your advertisement
I think, I will keep Khaaranus only as distribution like in last 3 years… It is enough space to be in touch with the world.

What do you think about Poland Underground Metal scene? Which ones are your favorites?
Definitively Squash Bowels and Parricide. Don´t know if Dead Infection is dead or alive…. and PL death metal bands I check only as passive fan… time to time I hear some when some my friend will recomend me and that all.

Yes, my brother, here is an opportunity for you, what will you say about Rip-off?
He, he, I got few such experiences in deep past as many other labels/distros but it is so far in time that I only laught it with nostalgic memories now only 🙂 At the present there are not so many most active labels/distros as years ago and there are long years well co-operating friendly relationships among those who survived, so I see it working well and fair generally.

There are bands saying that “We are short of money but we play quality music” and in spite of recording a very had demo they say that group should he supported. If the groups record is bad but its music is quality, should it be supported? Or should the band try to find better conditions?
It is very easy, if the unknown band is on high-quality musically – then they really must try to make as best record as possible otherwise they can bury themselves on the start. You know, today´s world better said people, fans are in touch with so much music in all genres via interent that they dont care for such “half quality” stuffs…. Current fans are looking for the highest quakities in this or that genre. I see it like that, maybe I am wrong.

People download mp3 of music bands from internet without giving money in the place of buying album anymore. What do you think about that topic as a person
having a Rec.?
I dont care since long years ago when it all went down slowly with selling CDs…. I takje it as natural development in this branch. CD is just article for collectors only, so who want buy it – that will buy it. We have to take it as pure fact. Golden times are over 😀 Whole musical world is more concentrated to make attractive and cool live shows and make / get money on various kinds of merchandise.

What materials must be in a good packet? Do you listen all promos which have sent you? What are your priorities in a promo packet (booklet, cover, cd-r, mark ect..)
I dont receive promo packets anymore… The bands who are looking for domething or wanna promote themselves are getting in touch via emails and sending links to listen their stuffs on-line.

How problems appear with bands you works? What are the conditions wanted mostly from you?
Fortunately no problem with any bands I have ever released out. You know, years ago the conditions for bands were really nice and later when the CD selling went lower and lower, the conditions were weaker of course, but the bands acceoted it as they saw what happend…

If you have an oppotunity do you want to work with which bands? And Why?
I already dont have such ambitions. I am an old man, it is for younger guys 😀

Imagine that you are in a boat with two people; You ,Barack Obama and Eminem and you are caught in a storm and your boat takes in water, for that reason you have to throw one person to the sea. Which person do you throw to the sea? And why?
I will hold piece of broken wood from the boat and will wait if I survive or not + tell those two sirs to do the same 😉

What do you say about Turkey and Turkish Underground? Hasve you ever been to Turkey?
Just in this second I remember bands: Cenotaph, Sakatat and UCK Grind. Surely I will remember more but not in this moment as I am really tired after long day and tomorrow traveling to Alps in Austria via some ferrats http://miras789.rajce.idnes.cz/Klettersteig_via_ferrata_Rakousko_12.-14.7.2009_JJ/ Yes, I visit Turkey in 2005 as we were touring over South/Eastern Europe with CT. Our friend Ferdi Arslan (Lion Ferdi) managed us 4 gigs there and it was simply great great great!!! whole the tour was just excellent and womderful. And Istanbul??? I have never seen larger and so huge city with all around till then and after then!!! Really mega power to me, I still see it in my memories as it would be just few days ago!!! So cheerz to Ferdi and all people who were connecetd to us in 2005!!!

It’s time to end up the interview but before I want to ask what would you want for written in your tombstone? I wish Khaaranus Prod. a successful future and have a abundantly prizes!
Well, I made this answers out quite fast so hope they are not too brief for you… Anyway, thanx for space in your zine and pleasent questions!!! And my tombstone??? Ufff, what to think out right-away??? 🙂 aha, I know: No life ´till Istanbul!!!” 😉
Thank you / good night!!! Cheerzzz!!! Michal

Grog – Grindcore (Portugal)

Görsel

Hail bro, what’s up there?
Hey Bugra, everything’s ok here, just chilling a little before lunch. By the way thanks for this cool interview.

Let’s start with a short bio of Grog for our readers…
Well, Grog hail from Portugal and have been spreading their deathgrind madness since 1991. We have made de old school path all the way with demos-tapes, promo-tapes, 7´´ till we got to our first cd back in 1996. Macabre Requiems was its name, then we had a few line-up changes and in 2001 we recorded our second cd named Odes to the Carnivorous. After that we had a long time fixing, composing and planning what to do with the band, musically speaking, and though we still played live only in 2010 we release more new material including a 3 way split cd with Pussyvibes and Roadside Burial, a 18th anniversary cd with unreleased and live material and finally in 2011 we put our 3rd full length out. For the matter, Scooping the Cranial Insides also was released in 2012 in vinyl.

During all these almost 22 years as you can imagine we played a lot live in Portugal and outside also with many great bands as Nile, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Cephalic Carnage, Origin, Dead Infection, Rotten Sound, Haemorrhage and many others. The actual line-up is: Alex – Bass, Ivo – Guitar, Pedra – Vocals and Rolando – Drums.

“Scooping the Cranial Insides” album is a high quality work. Would you tell about preparation ranks of this album? How difficulties did you face?
The main issue about the Scooping planning was knowing what to do concerning the cover and artwork and band photos. We hadn’t the so called difficulties instead, I prefer to call them challenges mainly in the band photo department because we wanted to do something really bloody and maniac. So when we started the photo session we didn’t knew what to expect, but at the end we all had enough motives to be very satisfied with the outcome. Musically speaking we had a cool time as the songs where very well rehearsed and we would work with the same producer that recorded us back in the time of the 3 way split. So we were confident about the results.

During and after records. Did you face any Technical problems? Have you ever faced any hardness in your country while doing this job?
We already lived many experiences with the band some good others not so good, there isn’t a lot of support to the music outside the mainstream circle, so when you decide to play metal usually you do it with your own resources. We don’t live from the music we play, we all have jobs and we play mainly because we love to do what we do. When the band was younger normally we would go all around the country to play live and many times we would pay to play for instance, we also have been ripped off in some shows but all in all I think that’s all part of the experience of having a band.
Nowadays, we try to mange things differently and because of that we are able to settle fair conditions for us when we play live. Live sound wise it all depends if you have a good sound technician or not, fortunately most of the times we do, also in several cases we had to create a technical solution to overcome some equipment malfunction or loss, although sometimes that’s not possible. For instance, last month in London, Ivo, our guitar player, had to play seated on a chair because its guitar strap got loose from the holder that fell under the stage and was never seen again.

How did you come to an agreement with Murder Records? What are the possibilities which they present to you? How much do you allow your rec. to interfere your band’s image?
Murder Records was one the labels that participated on our “Gastric Hymns In Mummified Purulency” cd, the one that celebrates our 18th anniversary as a band, so we decided to contact them for the album. We were searching for a label with experience on the underground scene especially dealing with brutal music and also with an office in Europe because we intended to be more central concerning all promotional and distributing matters. We showed them our songs to be included on the record and they liked it, soon we agreed to sign a contract with them and that was it. They still are our label and they have made a great with both (digital and vinyl) Scooping the Cranial Insides versions.

The only demand we made was to create as much as possible the opportunity to play in Holland a couple shows, which they accomplish to do. As far for the rest, they took over almost all the promotional and distribution tasks and they succeed on doing it. As we can see we are two separate entities working together so no one interferes with each ones work. When there’s something to be done we propose each others the task and then we see its viability.

What does the band do in nowadays? What are the last news and developments?
Right now we are writing the new songs for the next album and we have made a couple live appearances in Portugal and England. We will have more dates towards October in Portugal also, but our full commitment is towards the new album which we want to record during early 2014. That’s all I can advance right now.

Lets talk about lyrics some. What do you mention in lyrics and who is writing them?
I am responsible for the lyric concept in the band and for that I write all of them. I think it’s part of the vocals duties to do that. Grog deals with dark, deep, sordid emotions and behaviors of the human being. I am very interested about the human behavior because since forever, in the early days it was just a matter of pointing out some of the most atrocious and perverse aspects made by the human kind. Some of them are studied under the anthropological point of view, like cannibalism or the perception of death, under the perspective of the neurosciences like serial killers, sadomasochism and other subjects. Nowadays I am more focused on the human internal angle, because I believe that we all have a dark side that we need to know and deal with it. Those who can do it evolve to a state of knowledge that allows them to manage their own disturbs in a peaceful way, those who don’t, expose themselves to acts of inner violence that also can affect others.

What about your concerts? How is its mood? For instance do you play cover tracks?
We love to play live, we are always enthusiastic about our gigs and we like to put a good and intense show. It’s nice to see everybody happy at the end including ourselves. If the audience pays to see a band, the band has to leave 500 % of its energy on the stage that’s what we try to do as much as possible. We don’t have the habit to play cover songs live but we have already made and recorded some. For instance MISFITS, NAPALM DEATH, NUCLEAR ASSAULT, AGATHOCLES and EXTREME NOISE TERROR. By the way, soon we are going to record another NAPALM DEATH cover for an Iberian (Portuguese / Spanish) tribute, so stay tuned!

Portugal Metal scene has presented very quality bands to the world. What are your opinions about this? And is there hardness of doing this job in your country?
Yes, that’s true, it’s about time for the world to seriously support Portuguese Metal bands because when I say Metal I mean that we have great bands in all different styles, from the traditional Heavy Metal , to Thrash, Death, Black Metal and Grindcore. On other words, there’s so much more good pearls besides MOONSPELL! I think that Portuguese bands have done a great job in the last few years. They have improved a lot in the musical field and also they have been able to play outside Portugal more often which helps a lot their promotion. It’s not easy to be a professional and full time band, but you can be in between that and still maintain the required quality standards. Like I said previously, if you really want to have and keep a metal band alive you will do it no matter what, so the difficulties sometimes are a little subjective and only exist to test your will!

Well, to you what’s the difference of Grog from other Grindcore bands?
I feel that we really do our music, the music we feel inside our guts and heart, you know? It’s difficult to put this into words, but we have an identity as a band, of course we have our influences, but we try to keep our mark present and alive in the music. Many of our fans come to us when we play something new and usually it’s said that’s a Grog song. We mix the old school spirit with new ideas, with many non metal influences, sometimes, and all mixed it’s Grog. Better for you to listen and feel what I’ve explained.

How much importance do you give to your band’s advertisement? And how much important are other people’s thought?
The advertisement it’s crucial, there’s no way we can reach people without it. Back in the 90’s you had flyers, radio shows, stickers and paper zines especially, but nowadays almost all of this has disappeared and evolved to online and web contents. Still, it’s fundamental to promote and to share your music with the rest of the world.
I always said that Grog makes music for themselves, firstly and above all. Never the less, we have all the interest to know what people think about our music. All good reviews and opinions are more than welcome, but when you receive a bad one you need to know if it’s a fair one or not. Sometimes, it isn’t, sometimes when someone grabs your cd to review it and isn’t into brutal death grind of course it’s normal to write bad things about it, but when someone who likes the genre does that you got to stop what you are doing and reflect just a bit on the words because they can lead you to some inner revelations you hadn’t sort it out yet.

What are your opinion about mp3 problem? Are you an mp3 listener? F.I. if you see your tracks in an mp3 format at internet, what do your reactions be?
Well, to be honest sharing mp3 isn’t the real issue on this matter to me. For me the people who are behind the creation or better saying the conversion of the digital or analogic sound files into mp3 and all the market circuit that support music are the main reason that lead to the massive mp3 consumption we watch every day.
Many labels not to say almost all the labels in the planet work with mp3 when the promotion of the bands start, that’s the beginning of all of this fuzz, also when you make a pre-order there groups that are responsible to distribute the release over the internet. Why? Maybe music in many ways became expensive, maybe everybody knows that 90 % of the money earn in the musical industry goes for the labels, maybe the internet works out as a first filter to listen the new releases for the fans across the world, maybe just because there’s too much good music out there and people want to embrace it all…the point is, music is culture and culture shouldn’t be chained. On the other hand, one thing is for sure, when you play good music and people like it, your fans will buy your merch and will go to your shows and will support you till the end. I listen to mp3, I dare to ask who doesn’t? I also buy vinyl and cd’s so when I find my bands music in the internet I know that it’s available for more people to listen. Can I fight against this tendency? Hardly, I think, so I try to concentrate in what’s most important and that’s to make the music I and my mates enjoy the most!

Sex, Narcotic and Rock’n’Roll. The best known slogan of the Rock’n’Roll. Is that a cliché or does it really tell us about Rock’n’Roll?
It’s a slogan that finds many stories and images inside rock’n’roll culture, but not only this kind of music. I think the everybody inside rock music is considered a villain and the media always enjoyed exploring this side of the story, but there’s a lot more about the rock attitude and way of life than those aspects. It’s a way of life sure and we also find a lot of good examples and positive messages inside of it.

Imagine that You are in a boat with two people; You, George Bush and Eminem And you are caught in a storm and your boat take in water, for that reason you have to throw one person to the sea. Which person do you throw to the sea? And Why?
I would throw myself to the water and swim as fast as I could to shore and let those 2 eat each other. Why? Surviving it’s not a matter of dirty politics or neither is a matter of hip hoping songs about the problems politics create!

Can you tell a comic event that happened with your band?
I think I can, once we were rehearsing and a gecko was on the room ceiling. So one of the guys grabbed a broom and smashed the poor little thing spilling its blood all over his face. As we were rehearsing an untitled new song this one became Blood in my face. It’s a tragic but somehow funny story I say!

What do you say about Turkey and Turkey Underground? Have you been in Turkey?
Unfortunately never been to Turkey but I think Rolando, our drummer, did since he played drums for AVA INFERI, though I am not sure to be honest. Regarding the metal scene I only know Cenotaph since they are, like we are, a old band and Decaying Purity. All in all for what I know both kick ass seriously.

It’s time to end up the interview but before I want to ask what would you want for written in your tombstone? I wish Grog a successful future and have a abundantly prizes!
Honestly, I think I want to be cremated and my ashes scattered in the ocean but for this purpose I think that something like this would be fine. Here lays Pedra, once He was born as Stone and know He returns to the World of Stones. Till dust do us a apart. Grind Up! Thanks so much for your support Bugra, all interested on following us you can check us out on the following addresses:
